Medical Retina Clinic_Mr. Mathur, Mr. Zaman, Miss Edrich, Miss Cook

This clinic sees approximately forty patients per week. Consultant, Staff grade and Specialist Registrar.  Specialist registrar sees new patients and discusses management with Consultant.

Fluorescein angiography is “on-demand”. There is a full time departmental photographer and the department is equiped with a digital imaging system. Images may be reviewed in each examination room.  The imaging system for diabetes screening is also integrated into the eye hospital and images may be reviewed at several workstations.

 Mandatory objectives

§        To see and assess new cases of diabetic retinopathy and discuss appropriate care with Consultant

§        Perform laser treatment for diabetic maculopathy

§        Perform laser treatment for proliferative diabetic maculopathy using both slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope delivery systems.  Perform indirect laser treatment in theatre if appropriate.

§        To see and assess new cases of age related macular degeneration. Discuss appropriate care with Consultant, including assessment of fluorescein angiogram.

§        To be familiar with handling the digital imaging system for fluorescrein angiography and fundus photography.

§        To be familiar with the Ocular Coherence Tomography equipment, learning both to acquire and interpret images.

§        To be familiar with the protocol for treatment with Photo Dynamic Therapy

§        To be familiar with laser treatment modalities for parafoveal disciform degeneration

§        To correctly advise patients about other surgical and non surgical treatment modalities

§        To see and assess other less commonly seen medical retina cases such as hereditary conditions, discussing appropriately with Consultant

§        To arrange appropriate investigations for patients with medical retina conditions, liasing with colleagues in Radiology, Neurophysiology, Genetics etc.

 

Desirable objectives

§        To observe Photodynamic therapy

§        Liase appropriately with Physicians regarding care of general conditions

§        Screen at risk patients in ICU for fungal vitritis or retinitis

§        Screen at risk patients for CMV Retinitis

 It is the belief of the consultants involved in Medical Retina subspeciality that the training given will enable attainment of level 4 competence as set out in the Curriculum of Higher Surgical Training.
