 Mandatory objectives

·       See and assess new cases of retinal detachment, discussing care with Consultant

·       See and assess new cases sent for consideration of Vitreo-retinal surgery, discussing care with consultant.  Choice of patients from the clinic load.

·       Learn to correctly examine the retina using indirect ophthalmoscope with indentation.

·       Learn to manage retinal breaks using indirect laser in clinic and cryotherapy in theatre

·       Learn to perform and assess ophthalmic ultrasound in VR cases

·       Learn to manage (supervised) cases of cataract arising after vitrectomy

·       Carry out (supervised) treatment of retinal detachment using a conventional approach, including drainage of subretinal fluid, intra-ocular gas and D-ACE

 Desirable objectives

·       Learn the basics (supervised) of pars plana vitrectomy

 Trainees are encouraged to follow up “their” cases on the ward and in the outpatient clinic. Discussion of cases with the consultants is expected and encouraged

 Training given in this speciality will enable trainees to attain level four competence in the Curriculum of Higher Surgical Training.
